Monastery of Sancti Spiritus el Real

The Monastery of Sancti Spiritus el Real was founded in 1307 by Teresa Gil. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, it is one of Toro’s great historic and artistic monuments and an outstanding example of Gothic-Mudéjar architecture with later Renaissance additions.

Among its most notable spaces are the cloister, chapter house, church, choir and refectory. The ensemble brings together different artistic periods and helps explain the religious, historical and cultural importance of this monastery for the city.

One of its main works is the alabaster mausoleum of Beatriz of Portugal, Queen consort of Castile. Her remains rest in this remarkable piece, located in the centre of the choir of the monastery church.

The church preserves an impressive Mudéjar wooden ceiling and a highly valuable main altarpiece. The monastery also houses the Museum of Sacred Art, with an important collection of relics, sculptures, liturgical pieces and works connected with Toro’s religious history.

Due to its heritage value and because it is one of the most visitable spaces in the city, the Monastery of Sancti Spiritus el Real is an essential stop during a stay at Hotel Juan II.
