Stone Bull in Toro

What to see in Toro

Stone Bull

The Stone Bull stands at the entrance to the town, next to the Arch of Santa Catalina. It is a single-piece granite sculpture, roughly carved, representing a bull.

It is believed that the town’s name may be linked to this figure. The sculpture is associated with the earliest peoples who settled on the Iberian plateau before Roman domination and resembles other well-known stone bulls such as those of Guisando in Ávila or the bull of Salamanca.

These sculptures were often placed as landmarks on roads or important routes and were linked with strength, rain and the fertility of the fields. The bull has always been closely connected with Toro’s identity and early coat of arms.

This place forms part of the cultural heritage that makes Toro one of the most interesting destinations in Zamora for a monumental, wine-focused and gastronomic getaway.
